Scan Kiosk Installation Project Planning

Article 000002137 · Updated Nov 27, 2023

SCAN KIOSK INSTALLATION PROJECT PLANNING

The Scan Kiosk is a self-contained system with three connections: Power, Network and Gate Control. No additional hardware is needed to use the scan kiosk once installed, but a monitor with HDMI connection and USB keyboard/mouse may be needed during installation to access the internal software settings.  The only input once the scan kiosk is set up is the barcode scanner.

QUESTIONS FOR THE COMMUNITY

CLARIFICATIONS ON WHY TO ASK THESE QUESTIONS

Are severe temperatures and weather common in the area?

Extreme conditions will affect hardware performance and durability. Extreme heat and cold can disable the internal components of the Scan Kiosk and cause wear. Ambient temperature is important, temperatures that exceed minimum/maximum temperatures will interfere with functionality.

See User Environment Specifications for Zebra DS457

Is there an existing gate/door system?

The Scan Kiosk comes with a dry contact relay inside that is wired to two-conductor wire. The other end needs to be connected to a gate control circuit to open the gate when a pass is scanned. Only the gate control manufacturer can assist with specific wiring questions.

Is there a backup system to open the gate if there is a network or electrical issue in the area?

Scan Kiosks require stable power and internet to function. Using only a scan kiosk at a location without another way of opening the gate may cause an issue in an emergency outside of business hours.

Does Telephone Entry need to be used at the same gate?

A scan kiosk that works independently of the telephone entry unit can be installed at the same gate to allow the use of passes.

Is there stable power and internet already installed at the gate?

  • FRONTSTEPS Dwelling can function locally without network connection to the web server for a time and will upload all visitor data processed during that period without a connection once a connection has been restored. Stable power is needed for most Visitor Management Hardware.

  • Multiple devices on the same network as FRONTSTEPS Dwelling Visitor Management hardware will affect performance (e.g., CCTV IP Cameras on the same network as that hardware). Both download/upload performance/reliability and internal local network performance/reliability will affect the performance of FRONTSTEPS Dwelling Hardware. Consult the Communities ISP and network administration for more information.
